Okay, this is a little different to my usual posts about food, body image and Disney, but I’m hoping you guys will let me off just this once to help me indulge my musical theatre fantasies!
I recently spent an evening with Hugh Jackman – well, me and 18,000 other people! He’s currently touring with a collection of songs from The Greatest Showman as well as other stage and screen musicals he’s starred in, plus a whole host of other Broadway classics. I’ve always been a fan of show tunes, but this performance reignited my love of musical theatre and I haven’t stopped playing my Spotify playlist of Broadway songs ever since!
There are a few in particular which I find really uplifting and if musicals are AT ALL your thing, you might enjoy checking them out too.
1. This Is Me – The Greatest Showman
Ever since The Greatest Showman was released in 2017, ‘This Is Me’ has been its siren song. It’s an anthem for outcasts, a beacon of hope and a gateway to self-love and acceptance, in perhaps even more of a powerful way than the film itself.
* special mention also goes out to ‘Come Alive’ and ‘A Million Dreams’ from this movie which are equally awesome.
2. Defying Gravity – Wicked
It’s an obvious choice, but there’s no way this one wouldn’t make it onto this list. I feel more empowered and ambitious every single time I listen to it – without fail. And if you ever, ever get the chance to see Wicked on the stage and see this tune performed live, do it, because that high note at the end will knock your socks off.
3. Audition (The Fools Who Dream) – La La Land
This is one of my favourite musical movies to have come out in the past ten years so it was always going to feature here somewhere. I know it’s not everyone’s cup of tea, but the Hollywood glamour vibes and creative story of two dreamers just really speaks to me. This song might not be the biggest or boldest from the soundtrack, but it’s the one that always gets me right in the feels (in a good way!).
4. Don’t Rain on My Parade – Funny Girl
Okay, now it’s time for a classic (although does anyone else always think of Rachel Berry from Glee whenever they hear this? No? Just me then..)! If you need something to boost your confidence and make you feel like you’re cream of the crop, top of the bunch, catch of the day, this song is sure to do it. I don’t know if there’s a fiercer musical star than Streisand!
5. Tear Me Down – Hedwig and the Angry Inch
Hearing Neil Patrick Harris sing always makes me feel better about life, to be honest. But his starring role in Hedwig and the Angry Inch, and this song in particular, is one of his stand-out performances. Seriously, if you aren’t familiar then go check it out – like, right now.
6. Do You Hear the People Sing? – Les Misérables
There aren’t many moments in Les Misérables that inspire feelings of joy (the clue is kinda in the name) but, for me, this is one of them. ‘Do You Hear the People Sing?’ makes me want to grab a placard and join a protest march; I haven’t, obviously, but it does make me feel strong enough fight for what I believe in.
